Baby Steps: Spring ‘24 One Room Challenge Week 4

HEY, THERE!

Thanks for following my backyard project, it truly means so much to me! I didn’t end up giving an update last week because I didn’t feel like I had much new information to share, but wow, its been a week since! I FINALLY finished my stenciled floor in my greenhouse, and finally found the artist responsible for the design- Orla Kiely ( https://orlakiely.com/en-us ). I finished; building my 6 new garden boxes, staining said boxes, installing shelving in my greenhouse, staining inside and outside of my greenhouse, sealing the floor, cutting 80% of the fabric patterns for my big red chairs, removing sod from a very large area, loading sod, throwing out my back, sourcing pillows and rugs for the decks (https://society6.com ), and I got to move all my seedlings into my greenhouse!

Garden boxes. I am making them lifted off of the ground since it will be right over our septic drain field. I have made 3 of these 4x10 ft ones and 2 2x10 ( next photo).

Next, I stained the inside with a garden safe seal (https://www.sealitgreen.com/products/garden-box-armor-plant-based-wood-sealer-32-oz?variant=39926617 ), and the outside with a natural cedar tone to match the greenhouse.

NEXT, I installed my rubbermaid wire shelves. Most of these were bought for super cheap off of Facebook marketplace. The rest I literally dumpster dove for!

I am not someone who sews. I have a sewing machine from my mother that I have only used on occasion to hem something very very simple. So when I decided to make my own outdoor bean bag chairs, I was very nervous. I pretty much just drew the chair and used a tape measure to decide height and width of everything. I then made sure to add a half inch for the seam and drew up all my shapes. I HOPE this all comes together in the end, but I actually have no idea LOL. I am using this outdoor fabric (https://www.onlinefabricstore.com/premier-prints-outdoor-stripe-rojo-fabric-.htm?utm_source=google&u

More coming on this project!

If you are ever planning on removing a bunch of grass, SPRING FOR THE GAS POWERED. We used the push version in our front for some garden expansion, and this was so much easier. The whole project took 4 hours, which included rolling sod in between. The day after this I loaded it all up into a trailer, which is when I threw my back out and was bed ridden for the rest of the day.

My little helpers did get paid for this.

Below is the ground cover I will be growing in place of the grass. My decision to use creeping thyme is four fold. First, since our garden beds will be slightly lifted, I wanted something that grew only to a short height so we didn’t have to worry about mowing or trying to manage what would grow beneath them. Second, It attracts bees and butterflies. Third, ITS BLUE. Fourth, thyme has a scent that will help deter deer and rabbits from eating my veggies, and since I’m not fencing in these boxes, I’M REALLY HOPING THIS HELPS!

Paver pattern for the patio area. I have ordered 2x2 feet pavers for this space.

NEW PILLOWS!! I ordered these suckers from society 6, which is a company that artists can used to put their awesome designs on pretty much any decor item, and the money goes to the artist! (Black and white striped, and lime green are from amazon).

WHATS NEXT?

This coming week; I will be spreading my creeping thyme, starting to sew my big red chairs, and finish sanding my top deck (directly off of our current kitchen/dining room), and staining! If you want to see more of these 8 week challenge projects, head to oneroomchallenge.com/orcblog . P.S. I obviously chose that cover photo because my bubblegum booty looks incredible!
